The story
Edward and Alphonse Elric, two young alchemists, attempt a forbidden human transmutation to revive their deceased mother. This act violates the Law of Equivalent Exchange, costing Edward his left leg and Alphonse his entire physical body. Edward sacrifices his right arm to bind Alphonse’s soul to a suit of armor. Driven by the hope of restoring their original bodies, Edward obtains automail limbs and becomes a State Alchemist, known as the Fullmetal Alchemist.
Three years later, the brothers embark on a search for the mythical Philosopher's Stone, an artifact believed to circumvent the Law of Equivalent Exchange. Their journey, aided by military figures like Colonel Roy Mustang and Lieutenant Riza Hawkeye, soon entangles them in a nationwide conspiracy. This conspiracy forces them to confront the true nature of the Philosopher's Stone and the dark history of their country, all while questioning the cost of regaining their humanity.
