What is an anamorphic lens?

An anamorphic lens contains cylindrical elements that compress the image horizontally — classically by a factor of two — so a wide field of view fits on a standard piece of film or sensor. The image is stretched back out in projection or in post, yielding the 2.39:1 widescreen frame. The format was engineered in the 1950s to make theatrical film wider than television could be, and the optical side effects of those cylindrical elements became a style of their own.

Those side effects are the reason people still shoot it. Out-of-focus highlights render as vertical ovals rather than circles. How to get the look

Real anamorphic glass is the honest route: rent a set, test at wide apertures where the character lives, and light with sources in frame to wake up the flares. Expect heavier, slower lenses, longer close-focus distances and a focus puller earning their rate. On a budget, single anamorphic adapters on spherical primes get part of the way. Emulation is common — 2.39:1 crop, oval-bokeh and flare effects, added edge softness — but the compressed-background geometry of true anamorphic close-ups is the part software struggles to counterfeit. Whatever the route, restraint sells it: one motivated flare reads as photography, a flare every shot reads as a plug-in.

Why does anamorphic bokeh look oval?
