The story
In a world gripped by an industrial revolution, humanity faces a monstrous threat: the Kabane. These aggressive, undead creatures spread a devastating pandemic through their bites, transforming victims into more of their kind. Their hearts, protected by a layer of iron, are their only weak point. To survive, people on the island of Hinomoto have constructed fortified stations, relying on steam-powered locomotives called Hayajiro to travel and transport goods between these havens.
The narrative centers on Ikoma, a boy residing in Aragane station who contributes to the construction of Hayajiro. Driven to combat the Kabane, Ikoma invents his own weapon, the Tsuranukizutsu. His chance to test it arises when a runaway Hayajiro, its crew already turned, breaches the station's defenses. Amidst the chaos, Ikoma encounters Mumei, a girl who bypasses the standard Kabane inspections, hinting at a deeper mystery as the fight for survival begins.
