What is deep focus?
Deep focus holds acceptable sharpness from a face near the lens to action far behind it, so a single frame can carry two or three planes of story at once. It's distinct from deep staging — blocking action in depth — though the two travel together; deep focus is the optical half of the bargain that makes deep staging legible. Achieving it means fighting physics: small apertures, wide lenses, and enough light or sensitivity to pay for the stop.
The critic André Bazin famously championed the technique as more truthful than montage — instead of the cut dictating attention, the viewer's eye roams the frame and chooses. Whether or not you buy the philosophy, the practical effect is real: a deep-focus frame asks to be read, not just received, and rewards a second viewing with details the first pass missed.

When physics won't cooperate, a split-field diopter puts two focus planes in one shot at the cost of a soft seam. Then block in layers — near, middle, far — because deep focus with nothing staged in depth is just a small aperture.

Citizen Kane (1941), shot by Gregg Toland, stages young Kane sledding outside the window while his future is signed away at a table indoors — three planes, one irrevocable moment, and some of its deepest compositions were built with optical composites when lenses alone couldn't get there. Toland's work on The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) does it quieter: a phone call in a distant booth stays sharp behind a foreground piano scene, two lives resolving in one frame.
The Rules of the Game (1939) runs its farce through doorways and corridors in depth, entrances and betrayals stacked along the lens axis. Playtime (1967) builds 70mm frames where every plane hides a gag and the viewer is trusted to find them.
