Directing style
Guy Maddin constructs a claustrophobic, silent-era aesthetic by shooting primarily in black-and-white with a highly restricted, shallow depth of field that isolates subjects in medium shots and closeups. His scenes are overwhelmingly set at night and within interiors, relying heavily on practical fixtures, candlelight, and window light to carve tense, ominous compositions out of deep shadows. When color does break through the monochrome canvas, it is defined by a palette of stark whites, deep blacks, and earthy ochres, punctuated by vivid, theatrical shocks of crimson and orange.
