Romeo + Juliet (1996)
Baz LuhrmannDP Donald McAlpineIMDb 6.7TMDB 6.8See in full on FrameThrower →
The classic story of Romeo and Juliet, set in a modern-day city of Verona Beach. The Montagues and Capulets are two feuding families, whose children meet and fall in love. They have to hide their love from the world because they know that their parents will not allow them to be together. There are obstacles on the way, like Juliet's cousin, Tybalt, and Romeo's friend Mercutio, and many fights. But although it is set in modern times, it is still the same timeless story of the "star crossed lovers".
What dubious films are made of
How much more often each element appears in a dubious frame than in an average frame from the catalogue. A ratio, not a share — table lamp is not in most frames, it is simply far more common here than anywhere else.

How dubious films are shot
Weaker signals than the objects above, and worth saying so: most dramatic genres skew dark and night-heavy, so these numbers separate dubious from the catalogue far more than they separate it from its neighbours.
- 15%high keyvs 12% baseline
- 84%eye levelvs 69% baseline
What breaks the pattern
Sea Fever (2019) is the least typical film here — it carries the least of what the rest of this list is made of. Which is either a failure of the genre label, or the most interesting film on the page.
Method
Every frame in the FrameThrower catalogue is tagged for shot size, lighting, time of day, camera angle, colour and the objects visible in it. This page aggregates those tags across 774 frames from 11 films carrying the dubious label, and compares each figure to the same measurement across the whole catalogue (404,689 frames). Films are ranked by how closely they match the theme’s over-indexed elements, weighted by how distinctive each element is; one film per series. Only films with at least 20 indexed frames and 500 TMDB votes are listed.
