Directing style
Luhrmann constructs highly pressurized dramatic and romantic worlds by staging characters in nocturnal interiors lit primarily by practical sources. He relies heavily on eye-level medium shots and closeups framed with a shallow depth of field, isolating subjects against out-of-focus backgrounds to heighten the tension and loneliness of his scenes. The visual palette balances desaturated cool tones with hyper-saturated Technicolor accents, grounding the chaotic energy of his films in a rich range of deep shadows, warm golds, and muted, earthy neutrals.
