Directing style
Gilliam constructs a tense, ominous atmosphere by balancing medium and wide shots with low-angle perspectives, often splitting his depth of field evenly between deep staging and shallow focus. His lighting relies heavily on natural sunlight and practical fixtures, occasionally incorporating windows or firelight to split his environments between day and night, interior and exterior. The palette leans into earthy, muted tones and deep shadows, shifting between cool, desaturated color grades and warm, amber-toned warmth.
