Directing style

Joko Anwar builds tension and an ominous sense of isolation by framing his horror-mystery narratives primarily through eye-level medium shots, utilizing a shallow depth of field to isolate characters within dark interior spaces and night exteriors. His lighting relies heavily on practical fixtures and window sources to cut through the darkness, casting localized pools of light that leave much of the frame in shadow. This high-contrast approach is rendered through a predominantly cool, desaturated color grade dominated by slate grays, deep forest greens, and murky teals, punctuated by pockets of warm, earthy ambers and sepia tones.
