Directing style
Schlöndorff establishes a grounded, observational perspective by keeping the camera strictly at eye level, capturing characters in tense, lonely interior dramas primarily through medium shots and closeups. He isolates subjects using a predominantly shallow depth of field, rendering backgrounds into soft textures shaped by naturalistic window light, practical fixtures, and occasional fluorescent sources. The visual atmosphere is defined by a cool, desaturated color grade and a muted, earthy palette of slate grays, dusty olives, and deep browns, capturing a somber, everyday realism.
