Directing style
Hooper’s historical dramas rely heavily on cool, desaturated color grades dominated by slate blues, muted earth tones, and dark, dusty grays. He stages tense, lonely interior scenes primarily at eye-level, framing characters in medium shots and wide compositions that utilize window light, direct sunlight, and practical fixtures. The cinematography balances sharp focus and soft backgrounds almost equally, frequently employing a shallow depth of field to isolate subjects within these dimly lit, atmospheric spaces.
