Directing style

Samuel Fuller’s visual style is defined by a stark, high-contrast black-and-white aesthetic that favors deep blacks and crisp whites to shape tense, ominous, and oppressive interior spaces, primarily set at night. He relies heavily on eye-level camera angles and a shallow depth of field, framing his crime dramas and thrillers through a tight progression of medium shots and intimate closeups. Lighting is driven by motivated, real-world sources—chiefly practical fixtures and windows—which carve sharp, dramatic shadows across his characters' faces.
