From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Peter Hyams is an American screenwriter, director and cinematographer, probably best known for directing the 1984 science fiction adventure 2010 (the sequel to Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey), Capricorn One, the comic book adaptation Timecop and the Arnold Schwarzenegger horror/action film End of Days.

Born 26 July 1943 · New York City, New York, U.S.

Directing style

Hyams anchors his suspense-driven narratives in dark, claustrophobic interiors, favoring night scenes lit primarily by practical fixtures and harsh fluorescent sources. He relies heavily on eye-level medium shots with a shallow depth of field, keeping the focus tightly locked on characters while isolating them against murky, obscured backgrounds. The visual palette is defined by a cool, desaturated color grade dominated by cold grays, deep charcoals, and shadows, punctuated only occasionally by warm, golden-yellow highlights from localized light sources.
