Directing style
Nicolas Roeg constructs tense, lonely, and ominous atmospheres across dramas, thrillers, and science fiction by pairing a shallow depth of field with tight medium shots and closeups. Keeping the camera primarily at eye level, he relies heavily on naturalistic and diegetic lighting—principally practical fixtures, direct sunlight, and window light—to illuminate a near-even split of day and night scenes, as well as interior and exterior environments. His visual palette favors muted, earthy tones, sandy beiges, and slate grays, punctuated by a cool, desaturated grade and a distinct, recurring splash of deep crimson red.
