Michelangelo Antonioni, Cavaliere di Gran Croce OMRI was an Italian modernist film director, screenwriter, editor, and short story writer. Best known for his "trilogy on modernity and its discontents" — L'Avventura (1960), La Notte (1961), and L'Eclisse (1962), as well as the English-language Blowup (1966), Antonioni "redefined the concept of narrative cinema" and challenged traditional approaches to storytelling, realism, drama, and the world at large.

Born 29 September 1912 · Ferrara, Emilia-Romagna, Italy · died 30 July 2007

Directing style

Antonioni constructs a cinema of alienation by positioning characters in spacious medium and wide shots, frequently staging them in deep-focus interior and exterior environments. He maintains a grounded, observational perspective through a heavy reliance on eye-level camera angles, capturing figures in natural daylight or under the direct glow of practical fixtures and window light. The visual atmosphere feels predominantly lonely and tense, rendered through a stark mix of high-contrast black-and-white photography and a cool, muted color palette dominated by dusty stone grays, pale creams, and desaturated olive greens.
