Directing style
Serebrennikov constructs claustrophobic, psychologically heavy spaces by favoring shallow-depth-of-field medium shots filmed almost exclusively from eye-level camera heights. His scenes are defined by dark, interior night settings, lit naturalistically through window light, practical fixtures, and fluorescent tubes to evoke a tense, lonely, and oppressive atmosphere. The visual palette relies on a cool, desaturated color grade dominated by muted slate blues, olive greens, and cold grays, accented occasionally by deep, warm amber tones.
