Directing style

Juraj Herz constructs claustrophobic interior spaces and nocturnal settings dominated by a tense, ominous atmosphere. He relies heavily on shallow-depth-of-field closeups shot from eye-level, isolating subjects against deeply shadowed backgrounds rendered in high-contrast black-and-white or cool, desaturated tones. Lighting is motivated primarily by practical sources, candlelight, and fluorescent fixtures, creating a palette of stark whites, pitch blacks, and muted, earthy ochres and deep browns.
