Directing style

John Hyams constructs claustrophobic, high-tension environments by favoring shallow depth of field and tight medium shots or closeups, keeping the camera consistently locked at eye level to trap the viewer within the immediate space of the characters. His scenes are overwhelmingly set within dark interiors lit by the harsh, unglamorous glow of fluorescent fixtures, windows, and exposed practicals. This clinical atmosphere is reinforced by a dominant cool, desaturated color grade built on a slate-gray and slate-blue palette, punctuated by sharp, aggressive accents of blood red.
