Directing style
Joachim Trier constructs intimate, character-driven dramas through a reliance on eye-level medium shots and closeups, utilizing a shallow depth of field to isolate subjects within interior spaces. His naturalistic lighting relies heavily on soft window light and direct sun, which illuminates a predominantly cool, desaturated color palette of muted slate blues, sage greens, and earthy, bruised tones. This combination of tight, eye-level framing and dim, practical- or fluorescent-lit night interiors fosters a quiet, lonely atmosphere of domestic tension.
