Jean Epstein was a French filmmaker, film theorist, literary critic, and novelist. Directing style

Epstein crafts a tense, lonely, and ominous atmosphere by staging intimate dramas and gothic horror primarily within interior spaces, relying heavily on tight medium shots and closeups rendered with a shallow depth of field. He favors a level, eye-level camera perspective illuminated by practical fixtures, window light, or natural sun, which casts his scenes in high-contrast black-and-white or cool, desaturated tones. The palette is dominated by deep charcoal, ink-black, and muted slate tones, occasionally punctuated by stark white highlights that emphasize the psychological isolation of his subjects.
