Ben Affleck

Directing style

Affleck constructs tense, interior-heavy crime dramas and thrillers primarily through eye-level medium shots and closeups, utilizing a shallow depth of field to isolate characters in their environments. The lighting relies on realistic, motivated sources—predominantly practical fixtures, windows, and direct sunlight—to carve figures out of the darkness in both day and night scenes. This naturalistic approach is rendered through a signature color palette of cool, desaturated tones alongside earthy grays, deep olives, and muted ambers, establishing a somber and occasionally ominous atmosphere.
