Directing style

Schroeder establishes a tense, lonely atmosphere by confining his dramas largely to nocturnal interiors, relying on a shallow depth of field to isolate characters within the frame. He favors eye-level medium shots and closeups, keeping the camera at a direct, human-scale perspective while lighting scenes naturally through practical fixtures, neon sources, and window light. This naturalistic blocking is rendered in a predominantly cool, desaturated color grade, anchored by a muted palette of slate grays, deep olive drabs, and dark, earthy browns.
