Directing style

Resnais anchors his psychological dramas and romances in highly structured, eye-level compositions, favoring medium shots and wide frames that maintain a neutral, observational perspective. He balances deep and shallow focus across predominantly interior scenes, using practical fixtures, window light, and direct sunlight to illuminate spaces split between daytime settings and stark nights. His visual atmosphere leans into tense, lonely, and ominous moods, rendered through a mix of rich monochrome and a color palette that pairs muted, desaturated tones with sharp accents of primary yellow, deep blue, and warm flesh tones.
