Directing style
Larry Cohen builds a tense, ominous atmosphere by staging intimate, shallow-focus medium shots and close-ups at a persistent eye-level camera height. His interior-heavy, night-dominant scenes rely primarily on practical fixtures and fluorescent tubes to pierce the darkness, contrasted against daytime exteriors shaped by natural sunlight. The visual palette leans into a gritty, desaturated coolness punctuated by sickly mustard yellows, deep forest greens, and murky, dark-toned neutrals that ground his genre-blending narratives in a raw, realist aesthetic.
